Columbia needs to stop doing politics and start doing higher education

Columbia University, a renowned institution of higher learning, has become increasingly embroiled in political controversies, distracting from its core mission: education. While it’s commendable to foster critical thinking and engage in social justice issues, recent events suggest a shift towards activism at the expense of academic rigor.

The focus on political agendas has led to divisive campus climates and undermined the pursuit of knowledge. From controversial speaker cancellations to faculty protests, the university has been consumed by partisan debates, alienating students and faculty with opposing viewpoints.

This political turn has also led to a decline in academic freedom. Fear of retaliation and accusations of bias has stifled open discussion and intellectual exploration. Faculty members are wary of expressing dissenting opinions, while students are afraid to engage in challenging conversations. This stifles intellectual growth and limits the breadth of knowledge available to students.

Columbia must prioritize its educational purpose. Instead of becoming a battleground for political ideologies, it should cultivate an environment that fosters critical thinking, open dialogue, and intellectual curiosity. This means fostering a culture of respect for diverse opinions, supporting robust debate, and ensuring that academic freedom remains paramount.

The university’s legacy is built on academic excellence, not political activism. It’s time to return to its core values and prioritize the education of its students, allowing them to thrive intellectually without the distractions of political agendas. By focusing on its educational mission, Columbia can reclaim its position as a beacon of academic excellence, fostering a diverse and intellectually vibrant community for the benefit of all.
