The Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) has received a generous grant from the John Templeton Foundation to support free expression on college campuses. The grant will fund a comprehensive initiative designed to strengthen the academic freedom and intellectual diversity of CIC member institutions.
This initiative, titled “Free Expression and Intellectual Diversity on Campus: A Guide for Independent Colleges,” will provide colleges and universities with resources and tools to foster open and inclusive environments for discourse. It will offer guidance on policies, programming, and educational opportunities that promote robust debate and critical thinking.
“The principles of free expression and intellectual diversity are essential to a thriving higher education system,” stated CIC President Richard Ekman. “This grant will enable us to equip our member institutions with the tools and resources needed to foster vibrant, inclusive, and intellectually stimulating campus environments.”
The initiative will take a multi-pronged approach, including:
Developing practical guidance: CIC will produce a comprehensive guide for college leaders on fostering free expression and intellectual diversity, addressing policy considerations, campus culture, and best practices.
Providing training workshops: CIC will offer workshops for faculty, staff, and students on topics such as respectful discourse, handling controversial subjects, and creating inclusive campus communities.
Sharing best practices: The initiative will highlight successful programs and initiatives from CIC member institutions that have effectively promoted free expression and intellectual diversity.
This initiative underscores the importance of a robust and open exchange of ideas in higher education. By equipping independent colleges with the necessary tools and resources, CIC aims to ensure that all students, faculty, and staff have the opportunity to express themselves freely and engage in meaningful intellectual discourse.
