Your Idaho teaching license is good for 5 years, at which time it has to be renewed. You have to complete 6 PD credits during these 5 years before the renewal of your license. Documentation of this PD does not need to be submitted with your Renewal Application, but you have to keep it in your files if the State Board of Education conducts an audit. License renewals can also be conducted online.

For PD credits to count towards renewal, they have to meet these conditions:

  • They have to be specifically related to your PD as an educator
  • They have to be tied to the content areas in which you are certified to teach
  • They have to pertain to the pedagogical best practices of an educator
  • At least 3-semester credits of the total of 6 PD credits have to be taken via college or university credit courses
  • You can substitute in-service hours for up to 3 of the 6 semester credit hours required for license renewal. Document them via this form.

After possessing your Initial Teaching License and teaching for 4 years, you can apply for your Standard Teaching License. During these 4 years, you have to also complete one of the following PD options:

Once you obtain your Standard License, it is good for 5 years, after which time it has to be renewed. Illinois teaching licenses can be renewed online through the Educator Certification System (ECS). At the time of renewal, you have to submit an Assurance Statement online, listing the district in which you worked during the last year of your license’s validity. You have to also submit the PD activities you finished during the past 5 years online. Your renewal request will be processed, and a recommendation for renewal or non-renewal of your teaching license will be sent to the State Teacher Certification Board electronically.

If you have not registered your Illinois teaching license with a regional superintendent of schools for 6 months or more, it will need to be reinstated. After obtaining your Initial Practitioner License, you have two years to finish the Indiana Mentoring and Assessment Program (IMAP). This two-year mentoring period is necessary to obtain the Proficient Practitioner License. After the second year, you, your mentor, and your supervisor will fill out the IMAP Assessment Tool. This must be sent by your school district when you apply online via the LVIS system to obtain a Proficient Practitioner License.

Your Proficient Practitioner License is good for 5 years. During that time, you have to complete one of the following:

Suppose you wish to obtain an Accomplished/ Professional Practitioner License. In that case, you must have 5 years of teaching experience and a Proficient Practitioner License, and a master’s degree or NBPTS licensure. The Accomplished/Professional Practitioner License is good for 10 years.

There is no penalty for letting an Indiana educator license expire. However, before it can be renewed, you have to complete the conditions described above.

Renewal of Teaching Certification

Your Initial Teaching License can be converted to a Standard License after two years if you meet the following conditions:

  • Finalize the Application for Conversion from an Initial to a Standard License
  • Enclose an application fee of $85
  • Have your school administrator finish Section II of the application, confirming that you have finished the mentoring and induction program, have two full years of teaching experience, and meet or exceed the standards for Iowa teachers
  • Mail all of the above info to the Board of Educational Assessmentsiners, Licensure, Grimes State Office Building, 400 E. 14th St., Des Moines, IA 50319-0147.

Once you obtain your Standard License, it is good for 5 years. It can be renewed when you meet the following conditions:

  • Finalize 6 credits during the 5-year validity period of your license. Credits have to meet one or a combination of the following prereqs:
    • Be from an accredited institution and add depth to your licensure
    • Be from an accredited institution counting towards the completion of an advanced degree
    • Be from an accredited institution and lead to completing conditions for an additional endorsement
    • Be from Iowa licensure renewal courses sanctioned by the Board of Educational Assessmentsiners
    • Up to 4 credits can be obtained by obtaining licensure from the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards (enclose a copy of the license)
    • One credit can be obtained for acquiring 3 points from a combination of the following activities:
      • Mentoring a student teacher for 12 or more weeks (2 points)
      • Mentoring a  student-teacher for less than 12 weeks (1 point)
      • Mentoring a student-teacher for 60 contact hours (1 point)
      • Going to a teachers’ workshop with a student, you are mentoring (1 point)
      • Serving for a year or more as a member of a teacher eds program’s advisory committee (1 point)
  • Finalize the mandatory child and dependent adult abuse mandatory reporter training

Teaching Certification Reinstatement

If you let your Iowa teaching license expire, you will be charged a $25 per month late fee in addition to the $85 renewal fee to reinstate it. However, if you have not been teaching in Iowa since your license lapsed, you will not be charged a late fee. You have to also meet all of the renewal conditions above to reinstate a lapsed license. Once you obtain your Initial Teaching License in Kansas, it is good for two years. During that time, you have to complete the state’s Induction and Mentoring Program, usually finished at the Kansas school in which you teach. This has to be verified by your school administrator on the Application for Kansas Upgrade to a Professional License. Additionally, you have to undergo another criminal history background check at this time.

When you obtain your Professional Teaching License, it is good for 5 years. Renewal requires you to complete PD/continuing education during that period, fulfilling one of the following conditions:

  • If you do not possess a graduate degree: earn 160 PD points by a sanctioned local development council under an individual PD plan, with at least 80 points consisting of college credit
  • If you possess a graduate degree: earn 120 PD points by a sanctioned local development council under an individual PD plan.

If you seek another endorsement on your license, eight credit hours of the program you are preparing for this endorsement can be applied to your renewal credits.

Teaching Certification Reinstatement

If your Kansas teaching license has lapsed and you live in Kansas, call the Licensure Review Committee at 785-296-2280 to set up an individual PD plan. Suppose you worked in an out-of-state school under a good license/license for at least 3 of the past 6 years and have achieved a professional level license in that state. In that case, you can be eligible for immediate renewal of your lapsed Kansas license.

Once you obtain your Kentucky teaching license, it is good for 5 years. For your first renewal, you have to:

  • Finalize Section I of the Application for License Renewal/Duplicate
  • Have your school superintendent fill out Section II of the application, confirming that you have at least 3 years of teaching experience within the past 5 years
  • Submit application renewal fee via check or money order payable to the Kentucky State Treasurer
  • Show verification of 15 graduate hours or fulfill half of the CEO (Continuing Education Option) conditions

For the second 5-year renewal of your teaching license, you have to:

  • Finalize Section I of the Application for License Renewal/Duplicate
  • Have your school superintendent fill out Section II of the application, confirming that you have at least 3 years of teaching experience within the past 5 years
  • Finalize a sanctioned master’s degree program (32 graduate hours) or complete the CEO conditions
  • Send application renewal fee via check or money order payable to the Kentucky State Treasurer

For 5-year renewals of your teaching license, you have to:

  • Finalize Section I of the Application for License Renewal/Duplicate

Your Level 1 Professional Teaching License can be renewed once after its first 3-year period. To move to Level 2, you have to complete 3 years of Louisiana teaching experience in your licensure area and have 3 years of positive evaluations by your school district. You have to also pass the Louisiana Teacher Assistance and Assessment Program.

Once you possess a Level 2 or Level 3 Professional Teaching License, you have to complete 150 hours (CLU) of PD during the 5 years between license renewals. You can earn one CLU for each clock hour of active engagement in a district- or system-sanctioned PD activity.

You can use pages 4-7 of this form to renew your Louisiana teaching license. Include renewal fees, copies of transcripts and assessments scores as necessary, finished Professional Conduct form, and CLU info and documentation. Suppose you have a period of 5 consecutive school years in which you served as an educator of record for at least 90 consecutive days. In that case, your Louisiana teaching license is considered to have lapsed. To have your license reinstated, you must prove that you have finished 6 sanctioned credit hours of coursework. Before your license is reinstated, you have to file using the renewal form, pay the reinstatement fee, and provide official college transcript(s) proving you have finished these courses.

Once you obtain your Maine Provisional Teaching License, it is good for two years. It is not renewable except under exceptional circumstances. After two years, you have to apply for a Professional Teaching License. To obtain this license, you have to meet the standards for professional growth, entailing the following:

  • Completing 6-semester credits of college study in each of your licensure area(s)
  • Having taught full-time in Maine for the past two years
  • Finish the induction program for new teachers at your school
  • Meeting the conditions of your Professional Certification Action Plan (PCAP)
  • Obtaining a recommendation for renewal from your school admins.

A PCAP has to be instituted every time you move from one level of licensure to the other. Your needs and weaknesses are identified and targeted, your classroom performance is observed at least 3 times over two years.

To apply for renewal of a Professional License after 5 years, you have to prepare and implement a renewal plan for 6 credits of sanctioned study in each of your licensure area(s).

Teaching Certification Reinstatement

If you held a Provisional or Professional License that has lapsed, you would be issued a Provisional License as long as you meet the conditions (i.e., you have to submit a finished application package as you did when you applied for initial licensure). Once you show that you have finished at least 6 credits in each of your licensure area(s) and have met any educational conditions, you will be issued a Professional License.

How to Renew or Reinstate a Teachers License in Maryland

Maryland Renewal of Teaching Certification

To keep your Maryland teaching licensure current, you have to meet Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) Continuing PD (CPD) conditions. This will require you to create an individualized PD plan. You have to complete 6 hours of CPD every 5 years to renew your teaching license. School systems will offer CPD courses to teachers through their CPD liaison.

You will be given a renewal month, either January or July. Your teaching license would then be renewed in January or July of every fifth year. Administrative renewal fees are $10.

Reading Requirement

All Maryland teachers have to fulfill the MSDE Reading requirement to keep their licensure good. This is a one-time requirement for all Maryland teachers.

  • Early childhood and elementary teachers have to complete 12 hours in reading coursework
  • Middle and high school teachers have to complete 6 hours in reading coursework
  • Courses can be taken at MDSE-sanctioned two- and 4-year institution

If you work for a Maryland school district, they will handle the teacher licensure renewal process. If you are not working for a school district in Maryland but wish to renew your Maryland teaching licensure, send the following to Maryland State Department of Education, Certification Branch, 200 W. Baltimore St., Baltimore, MD 21201:

  • Cover letter
  • Official, sealed transcripts showing 6 institution credits or MSDE CPD credits obtained within the past 5 years, as well as confirm that you’ve satisfied the reading requirement
  • $10 check or money order payable to MSDE

The Certification Branch will process your renewal request and mail your renewed license to your address.

Teaching Certification Reinstatement

If you possess a Maryland teaching license that is no longer good and requests to have it reinstated, send the following to MSDE at the address above:

  • Cover letter
  • Photocopy of your last good teaching license (if available)
  • Official unopened transcript(s) showing completion of 6 institution credits or MSDE CPD credits obtained within the past 5 years
  • Reading requirement credits have to be satisfied if not already met

If all of the conditions for reinstatement are satisfied, MSDE will notify you via email. Any additional requirement that needs to be met for reinstatement to occur will be sent to you in an evaluation.

How to Renew or Reinstate a Teachers License in Massachusetts

Renewal of Teaching Certification

Once you obtain your Initial Teaching License in Massachusetts, it is good for 5 years. After that first 5-year term, you should apply for your Professional Teaching License. Conditions for a Professional Teaching License in Massachusetts are as follows:

  • 3 years of experience with Massachusetts Initial Teaching License
  • Finish of a Teacher Induction Program during your first year of employment as a teacher
  • Finish of 50 hours of mentoring beyond the Teacher Induction Program
  • Finish of one of the following options:
    • 50 hours of sanctioned content-based seminars offered by your school district
    • An M.Ed. program or in your subject matter field
    • If you already possess a Master’s Degree, finish a 12 credit academic program with at least 9 credits in your academic licensure area.
    • Possess Master Teacher Status by becoming certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards
    • Finalize a State Performance Assessment Program (when available)

When obtained, your Professional License is good for 5 years. To renew it, you have to complete sanctioned PD Points (PDPs) and submit a PD Plan endorsed by your school administrator. Finish the Application for Professional License Renewal.

  • For your main area of licensure, you have to complete 150 PDPs
  • For each additional area of licensure, you have to complete 30 PDPs

Teaching Certification Reinstatement

If your teaching license has lapsed for 5 or more years, it is considered good. If you are hired on a valid license, you have two years to complete the correct number of PDPs to make the license good.  Once you meet the conditions, you can apply to have your license reinstated via the Application for Professional License Renewal.
