Duolingo celebrates first refugee learners at ‘We Rise Together’ gala

Duolingo has long been committed to making education accessible to all, regardless of background or circumstances. In response to the UNHCR‘s 2018 Global Compact call to increase refugee access to higher education, the company launched Elimisha Kakuma (“Educate Kakuma”), an initiative aimed at providing refugees with the English language skills needed to pursue further education.

The We Rise Together Awards ceremony provided a platform to highlight the achievements of refugee students who have excelled in their English language learning journey through Duolingo. These individuals, who have faced incredible challenges in their lives, are a testament to the power of education and the human spirit.

By celebrating the achievements of refugee learners, Duolingo is not only recognizing their hard work and dedication but also drawing attention to the importance of providing educational opportunities to all, regardless of their background. In a world where access to quality education remains unequal, initiatives like Duolingo’s are crucial in helping to level the playing field.

The We Rise Together Awards serve as a powerful reminder of the transformative power of education. Through its work with refugee learners, Duolingo is helping to break down barriers and open doors to new opportunities. As the company continues to innovate and expand its reach, it remains a shining example of the impact that can be made when education is made accessible to all.
