Gonzaga introduces new dean for College of Arts and Sciences

Dr. Jones comes to Gonzaga from the University of Oregon, where she served as Associate Dean for the College of Arts and Sciences and Professor of English. Her research focuses on 19th and 20th-century American literature, particularly the works of African American women writers.

In her new role, Dr. Jones will oversee the largest college at Gonzaga, which encompasses 18 academic departments and programs. She will be responsible for strategic planning, faculty development, and budget management, among other duties.

“I am thrilled to join the Gonzaga community and contribute to the university’s mission of educating students for lives of leadership and service,” Dr. Jones said. “The College of Arts and Sciences plays a vital role in providing a liberal arts education that fosters critical thinking, creativity, and a commitment to social justice. I look forward to working with the faculty, staff, and students to build on the college’s strengths and address the challenges of the 21st century.”

Dr. Jones earned her Ph.D. in English from the University of California, Berkeley, and her B.A. in English from Yale University. She is the author of several books and numerous articles on African American literature and culture.

“We are delighted to welcome Dr. Jones to Gonzaga,” said Dr. Deena Gonzalez, Provost and Senior Vice President. “Her academic expertise, leadership experience, and passion for liberal arts education make her an ideal fit for this role. I am confident that she will inspire and guide the College of Arts and Sciences to even greater heights.”

Dr. Jones succeeds Dr. John Pellington, who served as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences for the past decade. Dr. Pellington will return to the faculty as a Professor of Philosophy.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Angela Jones to the Gonzaga community. We look forward to her leadership and vision for the College of Arts and Sciences.
